The IRCEMS training office maintains and enhances the skills and knowledge level of all field paramedics in order to meet the demands of the emergency setting. Whether it is a child or adult, a medical or trauma response, the IRCEMS paramedics responding to the situation have had, and continue to receive, the latest training to minimize injury and to save a life.

IRCEMS training provides the latest advances and training opportunities within Indian River County. The training office maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support Training Center and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Training Center status.

The training office provides certification classes for Healthcare Professional CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Education for the Prehospital Provider- Advanced Life Support courses, and PreHospital Trauma Life Support-Advanced Provider courses.
It is the goal of the IRCEMS training office to maintain a superior level of knowledge and skills for all field personnel. This is accomplished through monthly guest speakers, hands on skills review and testing, and inservice training. Interactive training concepts are utilized to broaden the knowledge and skill levels of all field personnel.

The training office utilizes scenario based training in order to provide real-life emergencies. Utilizing this type of training provides true-to-life responses from emergency responders thus reinforcing the key concepts needed in the field.

The IRCEMS training office interacts with other local municipal agencies in order to provide the most accurate and real-life training environment.

 

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

The Path to becoming a paramedic starts with an EMT-Basic program. Through this program, you will learn the essentials of basic life support and injury assistance. This certification will allow you to work as an EMT-Basic and possibly work assisting an advanced life support crew.
This program lasts approximately 4 months and consists of 119 hours didactic training, 60 hours of hands on training, 32 hours of Hospital rotations, 42 hours of ride time on an Ambulance. The total hours are 253 upon completion, and then you must successfully pass the Florida State EMT-Basic Exam.

 

PARAMEDIC

Following the EMT-Basic program you can enter an EMT-Paramedic program. This program lasts approximately 12 months. This program reviews the basic life support essentials, then progresses to training the student in advanced life support topics. With advanced life support training, you become competent in reading EKG's, administering various medications, and field treatments necessary to intervene in life threatening emergencies.
First you must complete an anatomy class "Survey of the Human Body" prior to enrolling in the program. The Paramedic program is 38 credit hours plus 4 credit hours for the anatomy class for a total of 42 credit hours upon completion. The Paramedic program consists of 400 didactic hours, 192 hands on training in the lab, 192 Hospital rotation hours, 288 field clinical hours on an ambulance and 128 field intern hours on an ambulance. The total hours are 1200 upon completion and then you must successfully pass the Florida State EMT-Paramedic Exam.
