Statement of Function
The Emergency Management Division’s function is to develop, coordinate and promote comprehensive emergency plans for pre- and post disaster events in Indian River County. Its responsibilities include ensuring that the County meets all local government requirements under the State Emergency management Act. This division is responsible for county compliance with Florida Statute 252 and all associated rules. Adequate public preparedness, warning, education and training are the highest priority for the Emergency Management.
GULF OIL SPILL
As of Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 8:00 a.m., the Florida Oil Spill Information Line (FOSIL) was activated to provide Floridians with response information and resources about the Deepwater Horizon oil incident. Live operators will assist callers with questions and direct them to the appropriate source of information on the oil spill from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., 7 days per week. The phone number for residents to call is 1-888-337-3569. This number replaces the Florida Emergency Information Line (FEIL) in order to better serve Florida’s residents and visitors. ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS: Many local community organizations need assistance with spill preparation or other important social services. All volunteers wishing to assist with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster must register with Volunteer Florida. Please note that all volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. Register Here
2010 STORM SEASON NEWS
Indian River County now offers a pet-friendly evacuation shelter.
 Indian River County plans to open its first “Pet-Friendly” hurricane shelter, just in time for the start of the official 2010 hurricane season.

Liberty Magnet School (6850 81st Street) in Vero Beach is the site of a new shelter where pet owners can safely be sheltered in the same facility with their pets during declared emergencies. The shelter is specifically designated for pet owners who live in the county’s evacuation areas. While all Indian River County residents should be prepared for a disaster, residents of the following areas are most likely to be subjected to mandatory evacuation orders: the barrier island, manufactured homes, areas subject to flooding, and areas east of U.S. #1. Storm Surge and Flooding Prediction Dropped in New Scale - NOAA's National Weather Service will use a new hurricane scale this season called the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. More information
NOAA’s National Hurricane Center to Provide Greater Lead Time in Watches and Warnings - Watches and warnings for tropical storms and hurricanes along threatened coastal areas will be issued 12 hours earlier than in previous years.
