The Fire Prevention and Life Safety bureau is comprised of five state certified Fire safety Inspectors, all are certified as firefighters and can be deployed at any incident Fire Rescue repsonds to. Four of these inspectors are also State certified Emergency Medical Technicians and carry some basic medical equipment in their vehicles. The Fire Prevention and Life Safety Bureau includes the areas of Site and structural Inspections, Fire Extinguisher training, Public Presentations, Fire Escape and Smoke Detector programs. We also offer a Juvenile Fire Setter program for at risk youths. In addition, we have been charged through state statute and local ordinance to provide regular inspections on new and exisiting commercial buildings on a regular basis. We track approximately 4000 buildings in Indian River County. Our services start with site plans, working closely with the building department through construction and final certificate of occupancy. We inspect every school in Indian River County and also are responsible for allowing open burning and fireworks displays. Did you know that our Life Safety inspections include such areas as audibility of fire alarms (to get you moving toward an exit in a timely fashion), stair height and uniformity (so you will not trip on uneven stairs and fall), secondary exits (look for these in commercial buildings and resolve to use them if the main exit is blocked), fire alarms and fire sprinklers designed to protect the public by providing early warning and limiting the spread of fire - giving you time to get out?
